Biography

Floyd M. Chitalu is a consultant specialized in applied math for physical simulation and computational geometry.

He has wide experience as an academic researcher in computer graphics and as a software developer. Before becoming a consultant, Floyd was a Research Assistant Professor at the University of Hong Kong, working in the CGVU group that is lead by Professor Taku Komura. During this time, his research work spanned across the fields of computer graphics and computational physics, with a focus on material deformation, collision and fracture through the use of physically-based models and simulations. He remains partially active in the CGVU group, as an invited research consultant.

Prior to joining the University of Hong Kong, Floyd was a postdoctoral fellow at the Centre for Transformative Garment Production (TransGP) . Before that he worked as a postdoctoral research associate at the University of Edinburgh’s School of Informatics where he supervised and developed models and simulation algorithms targeted at rigid body fracture simulation.

Floyd completed his Ph.D. (and Masters by Research) in Computer Science at the University of Edinburgh under the EPSRC CDT in Pervasive Parallelism programme. His supervisors were Prof. Taku Komura and Dr. Christophe Dubach. During this time his work spanned topics from GPU-based fast construction and traversal of bounding volume hierarchies for collision detection, to the simulation of rigid-body fracture, and developing computational geometry tools for resolving mesh intersections.

Floyd completed his undergraduate studies at the University of the West of Scotland , where his final year project focused on evaluating performance differences between OpenCL and OpenGL compute shaders for real-time graphics acceleration. His final year project was supervised by Prof. Pablo Casaseca. He was the recepient of The Renfrewshire Educational Trust Award  for being the "Most Distinguished Graduate of the University" across all programmes and campuses in 2015. Floyd was also awarded a court medal for best honors student in the School of Engineering and Computing for this same year.

Floyd was born in 1992 in the Republic of Zambia in a small town called Mufulira of the Copperbelt province. This is were he spent his early childhood before moving to the United Kingdom in 2003 . He has also previously lived in Göttingen, Germany and (on occasion) Hong Kong SAR.

Floyd now resides in Edinburgh, the capital city of bonnie Scotland of the United Kingdom.

Aspire to be like Mt. Fuji, with such a broad and solid foundation that the strongest earthquake cannot move you, and so tall that the greatest enterprises of common men seem insignificant from your lofty perspective. With your mind as high as Mt Fuji you can see all things clearly. And you can see all the forces that shape events; not just the things happening near to you.
